Ex Umbris et Imaginibus in Veritatem (Out of shadows and phantasms into truth) is an allegorical video work about unexpected relationships between the Pompeii ruins, the 2009 financial crisis and broadcast news (BBC and The Economist).
Pompeii, a ruined and partially buried Roman town-city near Naples in Italy was destroyed during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, serve as location for a video about the “Economic apocalypse!” - the first global financial crisis in the 21th century after the fall of the Lehman Brothers.
The lost of control in the image reflects the lost of control in the markets, and at the same time in the different level, the journalists makes and attempt to control with and interrupt flux on information and analysis.
Datamosh, a technique to exploit the way different codecs process motion and color information, is used not as a filter but as a reflection of the “melting” process. Reality, history, news, time and memory, everything dissolves into ruins…
Is at the same time a reflection about how news can change the perception of reality.
Ex Umbris et Imaginibus in Veritatem is a digital mashup between an amateur documentary about Pompeii and a visual dream with economic news as sound background.
