Opening at maat 8/11/22: LUZES DISTANTES / DISTANT LIGHTS

Following the exhibition at CAS - Centro de Artes de Sines, Luzes Distantes / Distant Lights will now open its second iteration at maat - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon, on 8 November 2022, and will be on display through 13 March 2023. The new installation focuses on a long-term research project that Nuno Cera started in 2019 about Sines – a city where the artist spent marking years of his adolescence and took first steps in photography. The result, Luzes Distantes / Distant Lights (2022) consists of a photo series and a synchronized two-channel video installation (38 minutes, in English with Portuguese subtitles, with original texts by Joana Rafael) that provides the title of this exhibition and a companion book. In seven episodes, the artist takes us to places he has selected as protagonists: the Sines Port Authority, the EDP Power Plant, Terminal XXI, the Galp Energia and Repsol refineries, the Quarry, the lands of the future Data Centre and EllaLink, in juxtaposition with natural landscapes.

Luzes Distantes / Distant Lights is a co-production between the Centro de Artes de Sines / Câmara Municipal de Sines (CMS) and the EDP Foundation / maat. The exhibition is curated by José Mouro and Julia Albani, with exhibition design by BUREAU Daniel Zamarbide, Carine Pimenta, Galliane Zamarbide, Amir Halabi.
